Bakelite

The chemical makeup of Bakelite — also referred to as “The material of a thousand uses”— is known as polyoxybenzyl methylene glycol anhydride. The ortho and para hydroxymethyl phenols and their derivatives are formed when the two reactants condense in a regulated acidic or basic media.

 

Novolac is produced by removing a water molecule from hydroxy benzyl alcohol, which is generated from phenol and formaldehyde in an acid medium with Hydrochloric acid or Zinc Chloride, during the polymerization process.

 

Hexamethylenetetramine (also known as HEXA), a crosslinking catalyst, and additional heating of Novolac combine to form the liquid cross-condensed polymer Bakelite. A filler and liquid Bakelite are combined, then the mixture is shaped into the desired shape.

 

Some of the characteristics of Bakelite are quick and smooth molding, heat resistance, scratch resistance, resistance to various destructive solvents, and low electrical conductivity. The key factors influencing Bakelite’s widespread use are its low production costs and simplicity of molding into various shapes.

These pots, formerly known as “Topham Boxes”, were the original machinery for spinning viscose into rayon yarn. Higher quality ingredients, such as specialized industrial cotton fabric, carbon fiber, high tensile SS wire and phosphor bronze bush are used in the manufacturing process.
